Christian Zehnder
Lebt und arbeitet in Basel. 

Vokalist, Stimmenkünstler, Jodler oder Obertonsänger? Alles mag auf ihn zutreffen und doch will sich der eigenwillige Musiker in seiner Vielfalt nicht einordnen lassen.

Zwischen neuer alpiner Musik, Jazz und zeitgenössischer Musik behauptet er sich schon länger erfolgreich auf internationalen Bühnen; immer liegt ein Hauch von Schweizer Bergluft in seinem Gesang.

Sein Interesse an der darstellenden Kunst bringt ihn mit dem Theater zusammen, wo er als Schauspielmusiker, Komponist oder Regisseur Projekte realisiert.

Mit seiner kontinuierlichen Weiterentwicklung der europäischen Obertongesangstechniken und dem nonverbalen «Global-Jodeling» gilt Christian Zehnder in  Fachkreisen unbestritten als einer der kreativsten und innovativsten Köpfe dieser Szene.

Christian Zehnder studierte zuerst die Jazzgitarre, bevor er ein klassisches Gesangsstudium als Bariton abschloss u.a. bei Raphael Laback.

Weiterbildungen im 
Obertongesang bei Tokne Nonaka (J) und Körperstimmtechniken nach Alfred Wolfsohn bei Daniel Prieto (P) führten ihn zum freien, nonverbalen Singen und in seinen ganz individuellen Musikkosmos, welcher sich oft an den Schnittpunkten von Performance und Musiktheater bewegt.

1996 initiierte er zusammen mit dem Bläser Balthasar Streiff das international renommierte und zum Kultstatus avancierte
Duo Stimmhorn mit welchem er mehrfach ausgezeichnet wurde und zahlreiche CD's, Filme und Musiktheater realisierte.

Konzerttouren mit Stimmhorn durch die ganze Welt. Zusammenarbeit u.a. mit Huun-Hur-Tu, dem afrikanischen Obertonchor Xosa-Noquolnquo, Mercan Dede. Zahlreiche Kompositionsaufträge für Film, TV, World EXPO und Radio.

2012 wurde Christian Zehnder der Basellandschaftliche Kulturpreis für Performance/Theater überreicht.

2015 Nominiert für den Schweizer Musikpreis. 

2014 erhielt Christian Zehnder für die Philharmonie Berlin eine Carte blanche, um einen musikalischen Abend zu seinem ”new space mountain” zu gestalten. Moderation Roger Willemsen. 

In seinen Soloprojekten Kraah, Gländ, Oloid, Talk with my Turntables u.a. arbeitete er unter anderen an den Schnittstellen von Jazz, zeitgenössischer Musik und neuer alpiner Musik mit:

Christoph Marthaler, Barbara Schirmer, Noldi Alder, Don Li, Anton Bruhin, Tobias Preisig, Arkadi Shilkloper, Mathias Loibner, Andreas Schaerer, Kesselberg Ensemble, Casal Quartett u.v.a.m. zusammen.

Anlässlich der Münchner Biennale 2011 sang Zehnder in der zeitgenössischen Oper Amazonas eine der Hauptrollen.

Mit dem Kosmopolit und Jazzdrummer Gregor Hilbe entwickelte Christian Zehnder 2013 mit neu entwickelten Instrumenten ein zwischen urbaner und archaischer Heimat angesiedeltes Performance Projekt “Oloid”.

2017 Premiere der Solo Produktion ”Songs From New Space Mountain”.

Im Herbst 2020 wird er mit dem King Albert Mountain Award ausgezeichnet für seine besonderen Verdienste für die Bergwelt.

Christian Zehnder arbeitet vielfältig zwischen Jazz, neuer alpiner und zeitgenössischer Musik, als Regisseur und Komponist für das Theater Basel, Salzburger Festspiele, Mannheim, Luzern, Gorki Theater Berlin u.a. und den Schweizer Spielfilm Schwarze Spinne 2021.  2012 erschien seine Kreation «oops, wrong planet! “ am Theater Basel.

2014 entstand eine erste Oper als Auftragswerk am Theater Basel: «Föhn» ist im Zusammenarbeit mit dem Komponisten Fortunat Frölich und dem Schriftsteller Urs Widmer entstanden. 

Neben seiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit hat sich Christian Zehnder sehr für die Entwicklung pädagogischer Grundlagen des Obertongesangs engagiert, sei es als Dozent an Hochschulen oder mit Lehraufträgen bei Chören und Ensembles, u.a. Konservatorium Oslo (N), Musikhochschule Stuttgart (D), Musikhochschule Basel (CH). 

2015 gründet er mit dem Chorleiter und Musiker Marcello Wick den ”Chor Partial”, ein Projektchor welcher sich ganz neuen Obertonwerken für Chor widmet.  

2019- 2025 Künstlerischer Leiter der Klangwelt Toggenburg. Eröffnung des Klanghauses im Mai 2025, dem
Resonanzzentrum Peter Roth und die Erneuerung des Klangweges.

Er prägte mit seinen Visionen ein einzigartiges Zentrums für Klang und Resonanz im Herzen der Alpen, das einem breiten Publikum die Alpen als Klanglandschaft in Zukunft näher bringen wird.

Vocalist, vocal artist, yodeller or overtone singer? All these descriptions might apply to him, yet this unconventional musician refuses to be pigeonholed by his versatility.

Moving between new Alpine music, jazz and contemporary music, he has long been making his mark on international stages; there is always a hint of Swiss mountain air in his singing.

His interest in the performing arts has led him to the theatre, where he realises projects as a performance musician, composer or director.

With his continuous development of European overtone singing techniques and non-verbal ‘Global Yodelling’, he is regarded as one of the most creative and innovative minds on the scene.

Christian Zehnder first studied jazz guitar before completing a course of studies in classical baritone singing with Raphael Laback amongst others.

Further training in overtone singing with Tokne Nonaka (J) and bodily vocal techniques in the style of Alfred Wolfsohn with Daniel Prieto (P) led him to a free, non-verbal style of singing and his very own unique musical cosmos, which often touches on the intersection between performance and musical theatre.

In 1996, he and wind instrumentalist Balthasar Streiff formed the award-winning and internationally renowned duo Stimmhorn, with which numerous CDs, films and musical theatre performances were realised.

Concert tours with Stimmhorn through the entire world, collaborations with Huun-Hur-Tu, the African overtone choir Xosa-Noquolnquo, Mercan Dede and many others. Various commissioned works for films, TV, World EXPO and radio.

In 2012, Christian Zehnder was the recipient of the cultural award of the canton of Basel-Land, Switzerland, in the category of performance and theatre.

In 2013, he received a carte blanche for creating a musical evening around his „new space mountain“ with the Berlin Philharmonic. Moderator Roger Willemsen.

In his solo projects Kraah, Gländ, Oloid, Talk with my turntables et al. he has worked amongst others with:

Christoph Marthaler, Barbara Schirmer, Noldi Alder, Don Li, Anton Bruhin, Tobias Preisig, Arkadi Shilkloper, Mathias Loibner, and the Casal Quartet. In collaboration with the latter and Graubünden-based composer Fortunat Frölich, he has ventured into the field of chamber music, or new music.

On the occasion of the Munich Biennial 2011, Zehnder sang one of the main roles in the contemporary opera „Amazonas“.

Working with cosmopolitan and jazz drummer Gregor Hilbe, Christian Zehnder developed „Oloid“, a performance project with newly developed instruments set between urban and archaic homelands.

Christian Zehnder's multifaceted work includes the fields of jazz, new alpine and contemporary music. He has also worked as a director and composer for Theater Basel, Salzburger Festspiele, Mannheim, Luzern, Gorki Theater Berlin, and others. In 2012, his creation „oops, wrong planet!“ was performed at Theater Basel.

2014 saw the creation of a first opera, commissioned by Theater Basel: „Föhn“ was created as a collaboration with composer Fortunat Frölich and Swiss author Urs Widmer.

In 2020 he received the King Albert Mountain Award for his outstanding contributions for the Alpine World.

In addition to his artistic activities, he has become heavily involved with the development of a pedagogic basis for overtone singing, be it as a lecturer in academia or through his teaching position with choirs and ensembles, including the Oslo Conservatory (N), Musikhochschule Stuttgart (D), Musikhochschule Basel (CH), among others.

His primary interest lies in the creation of pedagogically well-founded teaching materials for overtone singing.

In collaboration with the famous Latvian Radio Choir from Riga, such an educational concept is already successfully being developed, allowing the professionally organised choir to successfully perform extraordinary compositions by their contemporaries. 

In 2015 he founded the “Chor Partial” with the choir director and musician Marcello Wick, a project choir dedicated to completely new overtone works for choirs.

2019–2025: Artistic Director of Klangwelt Toggenburg. Opening of the Klanghaus in May 2025, the Peter Roth Resonance Centre and the extension of the Sound walk. 

Through his vision, he has helped to create a unique centre for sound and resonance in the heart of the Alps, which will bring the Alps closer to a wide audience as a soundscape in the future.
